Edgar Calel’s Ru Sipanik K’aslem (Gift of Life) presents a simple yet powerful gesture: a slice of watermelon placed upon a stone as an offering. Echoing his iconic installation The Echo of an Ancient Form of Knowledge (2021), currently on view at Tate Modern, the work carries forward his dedication to honouring those who came before. Through this act, Calel affirms art as a space where ancestral memory, spirituality, and contemporary life are not separate, but deeply intertwined, inviting the viewer to reflect on how rituals of care and remembrance remain vital in the present.
